About Me.
Claudia Lineweaver, PhD, LPC – Private Practice
I am a licensed professional counselor who earned my PhD in counseling from the University of Virginia. I have over 20 years of experience working with clients to address their concerns and issues in a variety of settings including schools, agencies, universities, and private practices.
Prior to moving with my family to the Charlottesville area, I operated my own private practice, Northern Virginia Counseling, for a decade. The practice supported clients with issues including grief, recovery, family relationships, anxiety, and those related to having a family member who is struggling with substance use disorder. I enjoy supporting clients that also may be facing challenges in their family such as a loved one with health issues, special needs, or emotional or behavioral difficulties.
I have served as adjunct faculty for George Washington University and Argosy University. I obtained an advanced certification in the treatment of trauma and have been trained as a Hospice volunteer. My publications and presentations have addressed: self-injury, perfectionism, and children of alcoholics. I have facilitated numerous counseling groups, including those focused on healthy relationships, recovery from bulimia, domestic violence, divorce, and caregivers of the elderly. I am a member of the American Counseling Association.
Most recently, I presented on the topic of overcoming perfectionism at the Evolution of Addiction Treatment Conference in Los Angeles. A client dealing with this may have a sense of shame about not doing enough or being good enough, even though they are typically very generous and sacrificial people. They often neglect their own self-care to put others first. I seek to help them overcome these patterns with direct, supportive, and collaborative counseling.
About You.
Do you focus on everyone else’s needs except your own? Do you find it difficult to put yourself as a priority, always putting your children, work, spouse, parents, friends, or family above your own needs and concerns? Is this complicated by supporting a loved one who needs extra care and attention because they have their own challenges with mental health issues, addiction, or health concerns?
Do you struggle with being self-critical and a perfectionist? Has this ever resulted in symptoms of people pleasing, depression, anxiety, compulsive overeating, exhaustion, and/or alcohol abuse in your life?
If so, in an encouraging and non-judgmental relationship, I believe that we can work together to help you to identify your strengths, as well as the reasons why these destructive patterns developed. Furthermore, together, we can develop & implement a strategy for changing any harmful patterns into more productive, positive choices for your life.
I would like to help you to take steps to construct a life that honors you and matches your values. My hope is that you will leave our sessions feeling validated, understood, supported, encouraged, challenged, enlightened, hopeful, and empowered.
